Our plants are grown in Burbank, California. They are carefully chosen dahlias that have performed well in our climate. Sales are for spring pickup in Burbank or local delivery only. No shipping is available this year.
Rooted cuttings and tubers are both identical to the parent plant. Rooted cuttings bloom faster than tubers and will typically make tubers their first year. Your cuttings will come in 4" pots ready to be planted in the ground or container.
Dahlias don't last long in a vase, around 5 days usually, and they don't travel well. They are not like some flowers that can be shipped to the US from other countries. Dahlias want to be grown and valued locally. To extend vase life, we put a couple of tablespoons of Alum in the bucket with water when we cut. Alum is a common pickling spice that's widely available.
For an additional $5, we will deliver within 10 miles of 91505.
Purchased rooted cuttings can be picked up in Burbank:
Pick up dates have passed for the 2025 season.
Dahlias are surprisingly easy to grow. Your cuttings will be ready for immediate planting. Dig a hole 4-6" deep in the ground or a container and add a small amount of bone meal or starter fertilizer. Plant the cutting and fill in the hole with dirt. Add a support stake now, if your dahlia will be more than 3' tall. Dahlias are usually planted 12" apart, but we plant 9" due to space constraints. We sprinkle Sluggo Plus around cutting when they're small. Planting in partial shade with morning sun is best.
Ours are watered with our sprinkler system three times a week. Best not to use a high nitrogen fertilizer but a balanced fertilizer is recommended before blooms start. Once we see buds, we fertilize every other week with Alaska Morbloom and off weeks, we spray with horticultural oil (organic) to deter pests and powdery mildew.
Dahlias will grow for years in the ground and you don't need to lift them, unless you want to divide the tubers, which we do in January. We start our tubers inside, take cuttings, and plant back in the ground the first week of March. They typically grow here between March and October, with the first bloom around mid-June, although each variety is different. There are some local SoCal growers who are able to maintain blooms year round! We'll be testing that in the 2025 season! There are more instructions on our instagram page @naomi_street_dahlias.
This is based on personal experience growing KA's® varieties in my garden. It's clear that the blooms are gorgeous in form and color. But what you might not know, is that the plants themselves are strong and healthy. I didn't need to stake them here on Naomi Street, although staking is a good idea. (I imagine I will be staking KA's® Khaleesi when I grow her for the first time this year with her 10" bloom!) Naomi Street Dahlias is proud to be a licensed seller and to support Kristine's hybridizing program with your help.
That's what I asked myself when I fell in love with dahlias in 2019. I was buying tubers from Oregon and Washington because I couldn't find anyone selling special varieties locally. Why?
I believe dahlias can thrive in our Southern California climate and I'm passionate about sharing them with my neighbors. This site is carefully curated with only varieties that are happy growing in my Burbank backyard.
Years later, I fell in love with Kristine Albrecht's KA® varieties and became a licensed seller. A percentage of the sale of her varieties is given back to support her hybridizing program.
In January 2025, I had my first presale for rooted cuttings ready to plant. It was a success and most varieties sold out in hours! In 2026, my goal is to ship nationwide.
